- What areas does DriveOffer buy cars in?
- DriveOffer buys cars across Alberta, Saskatchewan and British Columbia: 264 cities and towns in total. We're based in Edmonton, Alberta, and how we serve a place depends on how far it is: we come to you in person across the Edmonton region, we travel out to the rest of Alberta on a scheduled day, and outside Alberta we prepare the offer remotely and arrange collection with you.
- Do you come to me to pick up the car?
- Yes, wherever we serve. We have people around Alberta, Saskatchewan and British Columbia, so a visit is often the same day, and we confirm the timing with you when your offer goes out. Nothing is committed on either side until that is agreed.
- Do I pay tax when I sell my car privately?
- It depends on your province, and it's the buyer who pays rather than you. Alberta charges no provincial sales tax on a private vehicle sale at all. Saskatchewan charges PST on used light vehicles above a threshold, collected by SGI when the buyer registers. British Columbia charges 12% PST on most private used vehicle sales, collected by ICBC at registration and calculated on the purchase price or the vehicle's wholesale value, whichever is greater. Confirm the current rules with SGI or ICBC before you sell.
- Where does the ownership transfer actually happen?
- In Alberta it's done at a registry agent, the private offices that handle vehicle registration across the province. In Saskatchewan it's an SGI motor licence issuer. In British Columbia it's an ICBC Autoplan broker, using the Transfer/Tax Form (APV9T). In all three your plates stay with you rather than going with the car. When we buy your car we complete that side of it for you.
- My town isn't on the list. Can I still sell you my car?
- Send us the details anyway. The list covers the cities and larger towns, not every community, and we'd rather tell you straight away whether we can reach you than have you assume we can't. Either way you'll have a real number to measure any other offer against, at no cost.
- Do you buy cars with a loan still on them?
- Yes, and it's common in every province we serve. We contact your lender for the payout figure and settle it directly. If the car is worth more than you owe, the difference is yours; if it's worth less, you cover the shortfall. Either way you aren't paying the loan off first out of your own pocket.
- Is DriveOffer licensed?
- DriveOffer is operated by DriveOffer LLC and is licensed by AMVIC, the Alberta Motor Vehicle Industry Council, under licence B2036941. Any business buying vehicles from the public in Alberta has to be AMVIC-licensed, and it's worth asking anyone else you deal with for their number.
